Should you do a tour?
The Palace of Versailles is almost to 700k sqft (63k sqm). The gardens are 2000 acres. Excluding historical context, you should do a tour of Versailles based on the sheer enormity of the location.
That said, there is considerable context and history to be learned as well. You absolutely should do a tour of Versailles the area.
How do you get to Versailles?
Versailles is most easily reached by train from Paris. Car or bus is also acceptable. You could ride a bicycle to Versailles in about 90 minutes from the center of Paris.
If you have nothing better to do, you could even walk there in 4.5 hours, but I wouldn’t recommend it.
1624 – The Palace of Versailles starts off as a hunting lodge built by Louis XIII
1678 – After some war successes, Louis XIV “The Sun King” decided to remodel his late father’s hunting lodge to make it more comfortable for him and his lovers.
1710 – The Palace was proclamed “finished” boasting a stunning 2300 rooms, 700k square feet, and 2000 acres of gardens. The Sun King required his entire “court” live there with him. Somehow, there were no bathrooms and people peed and poo’d behind staircases.
1715 – The Sun King, Louis XIV dies
1793 – The French Revolution culminated in the execution of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette, blamed for the nation’s suffering and the extravagance of Versailles.
2008 – The golden gates of Versailles are rebuilt after over 200 years to restore it to its pre-French Revolution state.
